Riyadh, originally a tribal settlement in the Najd region, rose to prominence through the alliance between Muhammad bin Saud and the Wahhabi movement, which established the first Saudi state in the Emirate of Diriyah. Ottoman forces later destroyed Diriyah, but the Saud family returned to found the second Saudi state centered in Riyadh. In 1902, Abdulaziz bin Saud seized the Masmak fortress, consolidating control over Najd and eventually uniting the kingdom, culminating in the proclamation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932. The discovery of oil in 1938 transformed the city from a modest desert town into a major economic and political hub, and today Riyadh boasts a population of over seven million, towering skyscrapers, and ambitious projects under Vision 2030 aimed at positioning it as a global brand.
