After Spike (Alfie Williams) says goodbye to his mother, who is euthanized by Dr. Ian Kelson after a cancer diagnosis, he returns a newborn baby—uninfected thanks to the placenta—to his island village. He leaves a note for his father Jamie, explaining his plans to explore the mainland and possibly return. Pursued by a larger group, Spike is rescued by a group led by Jimmy (Jack O’Connell), an older version of the sole child who survived the film’s grisly prologue.
