As a fragile ceasefire holds between India and Pakistan, families in Indian-administered Kashmir are returning home—only to find their villages in ruins. Roshan Lal, who lives just four miles from the Line of Control, says his house has been destroyed. Others, like a villager from Pahari Wala, have lost livestock and livelihoods. The recent four-day conflict—the worst in over two decades—killed around 70 civilians. It began after India launched strikes on what it called "terrorist camps" in Pakistan, in retaliation for an Islamist militant attack that killed 26 Hindu tourists. Pakistan denies aiding the militants, while tensions remain high across the disputed region. Many residents are now calling for compensation, justice, and stronger retaliation from New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, defying international pressure, has warned that further attacks will lead to more cross-border action.
