The National Anthem of the Russian Federation, composed by Alexander Alexandrov with lyrics by Sergey Mikhalkov, was adopted in 2000 after Russia sought to distance itself from its Soviet past. The anthem replaced earlier versions, including the 1993 instrumental anthem based on Mikhail Glinka's composition. While some Russians view the anthem as a symbol of unity and pride, others associate it with the violence of the Stalin era. A 2009 poll found that about half of respondents felt proud when hearing the anthem.
