The hymn of the Union of Squads was sung quietly yet stubbornly during the late 1970s, a time when the Soviet state was systematically dismantling clubs, squads, and outposts that had emerged during the 1960s Communist explosion. Despite the loss of many units, the spirit of resistance remained, though it was met with administrative repression, rumors, and eventually arrests. In a 1971 gathering, the narrator and fellow poet Vladislav Krapivyn composed verses for the hymn, adding a hidden stanza about the squad’s demise. The group later performed the final stanza, a farewell song for fallen squads, reflecting on the loss and the enduring hope for a brighter future. The account also recalls a playful incident at a New Year’s gathering where a snowball was thrown at a fellow member, illustrating the camaraderie among the squads.
