This performance showcases the excellent sound and energy of Bill Haley & His Comets, a review of the classic 1979 concert at Birmingham Odeon, England, their last professional performance outside the United States. Bill Haley & His Comets were an American rock‑and‑roll group founded in 1952 and continued until Haley's death in 1981. From the end of 1954 to the end of 1956 the group released nine singles in the top 20, one of which reached number one, and three others entered the top ten. The single “Rock Around the Clock” became the most popular rock‑and‑roll single in the genre’s history and held that position for several years. Haley, originally a country‑music performer, changed his musical direction after recording a country‑and‑western version of “Rocket 88” and a rhythm‑and‑blues track, eventually adopting a new sound that became known as rock‑and‑roll. Although several members of the Comets became famous, Haley remained the star. With his curly hair, the band’s sharp suits, and energetic stage presence, many fans consider them as revolutionary as the Beatles a decade later.
