Welcome to another episode of History Today, where we share news from history and archaeology that reshape our view of the past. Recently Irish Central published an article titled "Ancient bones show that the Irish are still not Celts", which discusses a 2016 discovery in County Antrim that could completely change the notion that the Irish descend from the Celts. In this episode we discuss the article, hear what experts say, and I share my thoughts. I emphasize the danger of misinterpreting ancient DNA studies to generalize across countless peoples and populations, and warn that if we are not careful we could contaminate an already complex past. I also note that I have always associated the term "Celtic" with language and material culture, not genetics, and that the scientific community has held a similar stance for centuries. Therefore, we must be cautious when using "Celtic" as a reference to DNA, which could exclude other peoples who share the material culture and language of the Celtic world. For more details, see the original article:
