We’ve arrived at episode twenty‑six and what a special mix we have in store for you. Your favourite DJ may be able to beat‑match records, but can they mix audio and visuals at the same time? Please welcome Jim’s Paradise, who is here to do exactly that. Musically, Jim provides an array of selections, from classic UK Street Soul to downtempo oddities, which he describes simply as “a few favourite finds that always make me boogie in my bedroom.” Visually, things are a bit more complicated: he runs the live audio through a variety of custom‑built generative networks to create real‑time audio‑reactive visuals, linking up a MIDI controller to allow him to adjust and mix parameters on the fly. Jim’s Paradise is an alias of James Keys, head honcho of the Wax Nomads DJ collective and one of the founders and directors of Hopkins Creek Festival. Hailing from Melbourne and currently based in the UK, Jim’s musical knowledge and collection spread right across the genre spectrum—you’d just as likely find him throwing down in a concrete basement at 5 am as you would behind the wheels for an extended set in a listening bar. A keen experimenter inside and outside of the booth, he has recently been innovating ways of blending custom generative visuals with DJ and live sets to create real‑time audiovisual performances. This was an experiment for us both and we hope you enjoy the results.
