In the 19th century, underground rail transport rapidly expanded across Western Europe and America, with London opening its first 6‑kilometre line in 1863, initially steam‑powered and later electrified. Other early metros followed in Budapest, Glasgow, Paris, Berlin, and Hamburg. In Russia, the idea of a metro emerged as early as 1875 when engineer Vasiliy Titov proposed a line from Kursky station to Mariinaya Roshcha, but it was rejected for economic reasons. In 1897, engineer A.I. Antonovich suggested a radial system linked to a ring road, though no geological surveys had been conducted. The project was later refined by engineer E.K. Knorre, who had experience building railway bridges and water‑main reconstructions; he documented existing underground tunnels, enabling the design of the “green line” from Zamoskvorechye to Tverskaya Zastava. After the Bolsheviks came to power in 1917, the need for a metro became urgent, and construction began in the early 1920s, despite the country’s low industrial productivity and rationing system. The narrative traces the evolution from early proposals to the eventual Soviet decision to build the metro system.
