Cheyne‑Stokes breathing is a specific breathing pattern characterized by cyclic increases and decreases in depth and rate, followed by a brief apnea pause. It was independently described by John Chain and William Stokes in the early 19th century. The pattern typically starts with shallow breathing that gradually deepens and speeds up to a peak, then reverses until a pause occurs, after which the cycle repeats. It can last from seconds to minutes. Cheyne‑Stokes breathing is often associated with conditions affecting the central nervous system or respiratory control centers, such as heart failure, stroke, traumatic brain injury, brain tumors, or certain medications, and may also occur during sleep. Recognizing this pattern is clinically important as it can indicate serious underlying disease and should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause and may include oxygen therapy or medications.
