In 1861, Countess Angelina marries Baron Mario. On their wedding night, Hungarian hussars threaten the castle, and Mario flees. Midnight, the paintings in the ancestral gallery come to life and summon Francesca, Angelina’s great‑great‑great‑great‑grandmother, to save the castle. Francesca falls for Colonel Teglash, who is leading the invading army. Mario is captured but spared when Teglash is impressed by his musical talent. A dream sequence causes time to stop, and the colonel eventually marries Angelina. The film ends with the portraits coming to life again to celebrate their union with song and dance.
