I went to Stations of the Cross this morning, a faith practice of meditating along the way of the cross with Jesus. There are 14 stations, from the moment He was condemned to death to the moment He died and was buried. It’s relatable because you see Him, the innocent one, take up His cross and suffer with such love and grace. Even though we are not innocent, we all suffer. His example of how He suffered and His attitude during the suffering—surrender and love—is really worth emulating. That’s why He asks us to each deny ourselves, take up our own crosses and follow Him. Denying oneself is a struggle, but if we can just deny ourselves, carrying the cross would be easier. Mother Teresa of Calcutta says to love until it hurts, which is the definition of denying ourselves because the world tells us love must feel good. Love until it hurts means exactly what it means. It’s too easy to love in convenience; we need to go beyond convenience. So help us, Jesus.
