While touring Tianjin's Tianducheng, a replica of Paris built in the early 2000s, I found myself in a ghost city where the Eiffel Tower replica stands but the streets are empty, the cafés are closed, and no one lives there. The project aimed to sell the romantic image of Europe to China's rising middle class, but it failed to attract residents, leaving the city a haunting reminder that architecture alone cannot create a city. The empty streets, silent cafés, and abandoned buildings illustrate how a place's soul comes from its people, not its buildings.
