Bishkek, formerly known as Pishpek until 1926 and then Frunze until 1991, is the capital and largest city of Kyrgyzstan, also serving as the capital of the Chüy Region. Situated near the Kazakhstan border at an altitude of about 800 metres, it lies on the northern fringe of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too Range, an extension of the Tian Shan mountains that rise to 4,895 metres. The fertile steppe to the north extends into Kazakhstan, and the Chüy River drains most of the area. Bishkek is connected to the Turkestan–Siberia Railway by a spur line. The city features wide boulevards, marble-faced public buildings, Soviet-style apartment blocks with interior courtyards, and numerous privately built houses outside the center. Streets follow a grid pattern, often flanked by narrow irrigation channels that provide water to shade trees during hot summers.
