Scientists using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope discovered a previously unknown moon orbiting Uranus, bringing the planet’s total moons to 29. The tiny moon, about six miles (10 km) wide, was detected in infrared images from Webb’s NIRCam on Feb. 2, 2025, and likely went unnoticed by Voyager 2 due to its small size. It orbits roughly 35,000 miles (56,000 km) from Uranus, between the moons Ophelia and Bianca, and is part of the planet’s complex system of small inner moons and rings. An official name will be assigned by the International Astronomical Union, NASA has reported. This discovery highlights Webb’s ability to reveal faint, distant objects previously unseen by earlier missions.
