Description:

The film documents blind storyteller Li Shouwang’s life over 50 years, showing his hardships, family tragedies, and the decline of storytelling tradition amid urbanization. He lost sight at four, learned storytelling at nineteen, and used it to earn a living. After marrying a mentally ill woman, he had a son and a daughter who inherited her illness; the son became a traveling bridegroom and later a businessman who lost money, while the daughter married a man with tuberculosis. Li supports his children financially, and the weight of their misfortunes haunts him. As rural populations migrate, audiences for storytelling vanish, leading to conflict with village teams over payment. He longs for his son, traveling more than twenty miles daily, keeping his son’s photo close. When his son returns for the New Year, Li prepares the home with new windows, curtains, a TV, and a satellite receiver, hoping they stay longer, but the outcome is a sigh of disappointment. The documentary captures his perseverance and the fading art of blind storytelling.
