At Home Among Strangers, a debut feature by Nikita Mikhalkov, follows a psychological Western set in the 1920s in a small provincial town in southern Russia. After the civil war, former White officers conspire to undermine the new Soviet power. Bandits rob a Soviet train carrying gold, intending to buy bread for the hungry. Suspicion falls on one of five friends of former Red Army soldiers, who finds himself neither fully belonging to the old regime nor the new. To clear his name, he must recover and return the stolen gold.
