BMW E36 Test Drive

Alright, today we are test driving the legendary BMW E36.

It's important I mention that this is not my car.

I borrowed it from a friend.

So we'll have to take it a bit easy on this test drive.

As with any E36 it has a few problems.

The main one, I think, is the broken power steering rack.

The power steering likes to stick sometimes.

And it has some really cheap worn-out coilovers and a few loose bushings.

This is originally a 316i, which means it came with a 4-cylinder 1.6 liter.

But now it's been swapped to a 2.2 liter inline six.

This is the M54B22.

It originally came in E46 BMWs.

This engine produces 170 horsepower.

And in this car, 170 horsepower is pretty quick.

Wow.

this engine pulls really hard at any rpm and the sound it makes is just amazing

so

Yeah.

yeah something's wrong with the rear suspension the car understeers a lot more when you turn right and oversteers a lot when you turn left

but other than that it handles like a go-kart.

There's very little body roll and there's a ton of grip.

Yep, these old 3-series BMWs just have the best steering feel I've ever felt in any car.

Even in this one with a broken power steering rack the feedback is just insane.

This is how a car should drive like.

The brakes, the suspension and the steering are tuned to perfection.

As a driver's car, this is absolutely fabulous.
