Cargo ship crashes into Norwegian man's front garden

A 443-foot cargo ship dramatically ran aground near Trondheim in southwestern Norway early Thursday morning, crashing into the front garden of Johan Helberg. The Cypriot-flagged vessel, NCL Salten, narrowly missed the house by just a few feet at around 5:00 AM local time on May 22, 2025. Neighbor Jostein Joergensen witnessed the ship heading directly for the shore and tried to alert the crew by waving and whistling—but it was too late. The ship slammed into the property, stopping just short of what could have been a devastating impact with the house itself. The NCL Salten had 16 crew members on board at the time. No injuries were reported. Norwegian police are currently investigating the cause of the incident.
