In this step-by-step tutorial, I show the steps necessary to build a Nemoto Axe using the Houdini Modeler 2025 plugin. I picked this tutorial as it was one that Simon Verstraete over on his "Simon Houdini" youtube channel built. It was cool to use that as a way to learn Modeler by going through the same motions but using different techniques. I highly recommend checking out Simon's tutorial first if you are new to Houdini and wondering how Modeler builds on its functionality. If you'd like the HIP file I created during this tutorial, and the reference image to follow along, grab them from the Arcanacom gumroad: If you are brand new to Modeler and want some easier to digest tutorials (aka not so long :) ), start with the other videos in this "Learn Modeler 2025" playlist: Here is the link to the Modeler 2025 plugin: 00:00:00 - Intro 00:00:05 - Modeler Workspace 00:00:35 - Backdrop Node 00:02:20 - Space for Nearest Orthographic View 00:03:42 - Drop a PolyCurve 00:05:24 - Edit the Curve 00:05:32 - Alt-D Radial Menu 00:06:50 - ` for the Select Radial Menu 00:07:04 - Shift-T to Thicken 00:07:24 - State Selection 00:09:16 - Shape the Axe via Bevel 00:11:43 - First problem 00:12:27 - Fuse the Points 00:16:11 - Clean Edges 00:16:35 - Parm Slider 00:17:47 - Create Blade Chamfer 00:18:23 - Build Axe Cut 00:18:33 - Create tube via Alt-Q Radial 00:20:48 - Real-time Cutter Manipulation 00:25:39 - Manipulate Normals 00:26:22 - Build Cutter Collection 00:27:02 - Shift-Enter to Auto Connect new Nodes 00:27:52 - Labs Pick and Place 00:28:37 - Set our First QuickMark 00:29:43 - Using the Cutter Collection 00:30:03 - Click and Drag to Place Cutter 00:30:14 - Control to Further Manipulate Cutter 00:33:00 - Block out the Other Shapes 00:35:35 - Control click Template 00:37:36 - Match Size Node 00:40:02 - Alt-V to make shape Symettrical 00:41:28 - Ctrl-D to Copy Curve 00:41:43 - Ctrl-F to Fill 00:42:49 - U to Peak 00:43:42 - Resample Node 00:45:33 - PolyCurve to Blockout Grip 00:48:35 - MatchSize Again 00:51:55 - Duplicate the Cutters 00:54:54 - Select Similar 00:56:07 - Apply Cutter Thickness 00:56:19 - Seam Bevel 00:59:33 - Copy Face to create Cutter 01:00:33 - Tell Modeler what Shape to Cut 01:03:21 - Refine Grip Shapes 01:07:28 - Split Node 01:10:34 - Prepare a cutter for the Grip 01:14:21 - Direct Modeling vs. Procedural Modeling 01:14:54 - Polypen via Q Menu 01:15:43 - Prepare cutters for More Grip Cuts 01:17:27 - Duplicate cutter 01:21:00 - Cut out Finger Grips 01:23:19 - Edge Contour 01:25:15 - Alt-V to Sym 01:26:04 - Attribute Wrangle to Name our Primitives 01:27:16 - VDB Remesh 01:27:52 - For Each Connected Piece 01:29:13 - Split on the Primitive Name 01:30:57 - Attribute Wrangle for Random Color 01:31:10 - Meta Import Node #houdini #houdinitutorial #modeler
