I visited Tianducheng, a replica of Paris in China that was built to sell luxury apartments to the rising middle class. The city features a 57‑story Eiffel Tower and French‑style boulevards, but it is empty and silent, with no lights, no people, and closed cafés. The project, which cost billions, failed because it could not create the sense of community and identity that makes a city alive. Walking through the streets, I saw beautifully designed balconies and rose garlands, yet the dream was hollow. The ghost city reminds me that architecture alone cannot give a place soul; it is the people who bring it to life.
