Israeli strike kills Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza

An Israeli airstrike on a media tent near Al Shifa hospital in Gaza City killed Al Jazeera journalist Anas Al Sharif and five others, including four colleagues and a freelance reporter. The U.N. human rights office condemned the attack as a grave breach of international humanitarian law, while Israel said it targeted Sharif, alleging he headed a Hamas cell and was involved in rocket attacks. Al Jazeera and the journalist’s colleagues rejected those claims, describing the strike as a desperate attempt to silence voices ahead of a Gaza occupation. Sharif had previously warned of threats from Israel and had been part of a Reuters team that won a 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Gaza coverage. The incident has added to the toll of journalists killed in the conflict, with the Committee to Protect Journalists reporting at least 186 deaths and the Gaza government citing 238.
