The Sinaloa state, home to the cartel, has seen ongoing violence between rival factions, with 1,200 deaths since September. Figueroa was involved in a 2019 clash after the arrest of Ovidio Guzman, son of cartel founder Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. Ovidio was controversially released but re-arrested in 2023, Barron’s has reported.
