Malaysia to mediate Thai-Cambodian ceasefire talks #malaysia #cambodia #thailand #ceasefire #worldnews The leaders of Thailand and Cambodia will attend mediation talks over their deadly border conflict in Malaysia, the Thai government said on Sunday (July 27), even as both sides accused each other of launching fresh artillery strikes across contested areas. Thailand and Cambodia are set to attend talks in Malaysia over their deadly border conflict, the Thai government said. The announcement came as both sides accused each other of launching fresh artillery strikes on day four of the renewed clashes. In the Thai province of Sisaket near the Cambodian border, some villagers sought refuge at a bunker set up in the neighborhood. Shelling could be heard in the distance on Sunday, July 27th, just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump said that leaders from both sides had agreed, after speaking to him, to work out a ceasefire. That follows a truce proposal by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on Sunday endorsed the call for the fighting to stop. Thailand's acting prime minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, thanked Trump, saying Thailand "agrees in principle" to a ceasefire but that it "would like to see sincere intention from the Cambodian side." The Thai government's statement said he will lead his country's negotiating team, and that Malaysia has confirmed, Cambodia's prime minister will be attending talks. Thailand and Cambodia have bickered for decades over undemarcated points along their 508-mile land border. Tensions worsened after the killing of a Cambodian soldier in late May 2025 during a brief border skirmish. Hostilities resumed on Thursday July 24th and escalated into the worst fighting between the Southeast Asian neighbors in more than a decade. The death toll stood above 30, mainly civilians, according to the authorities. More than 200,000 people have been evacuated from border areas.
