Description:

41‑year‑old Major Ismailov from Serzhil‑Yurt, Chechnya, joined the 1434th regiment "Ahmat‑Chechnya" in May 2023. Initially service was routine, but in March 2024 he was ordered to move to border areas. When the Ukrainian offensive began, he was among those retreating, later described as "running away". He recalls the moment: "Ahmatovtsy were running, they say. When 150 people leave, 4 Ahmatovtsy should stay and fight? ... Are we like Terminators?". On 25 October 2024 he was captured after his group was hit by heavy fire; one soldier died, he was wounded in the arm, supplies ran out, and Ukrainian forces from the 95th Brigade took them prisoner. He says the Ukrainians treated him humanely, providing medical aid, water, and food. In an interview with Irina Krynina, he recounts witnessing a war crime: the killing of a Ukrainian POW by a senior officer of the first group. He was later reunited with his sister Madina through the "I Want to Find" project and could talk to family via video link. He now awaits exchange, serves as a witness in the murder case, and does not wish to return to war.
