The film is set in the 1950s. Mohan (Upendra) returns from the West after earning a double degree and is so influenced by Western ideals that he finds Indian traditions and customs utterly senseless. He is also the heir to a fortune left by his deceased zamindar father. Mohan begins visiting a prostitute named Kantha (Ramya Krishna) every day. Seeing his bad behavior, his mother arranges his marriage to a traditional girl, Chandra (Abhirami). On their first night, Mohan asks Chandra for a lip‑to‑lip kiss; when she refuses, he becomes angry and declares he will never touch her again. He then moves into Kantha’s house, preferring to attend her mother’s birthday party over his own mother’s last rites. Mohan transfers all his property to Kantha and declares himself bankrupt. Two years later, he suffers from leprosy. Kantha locks him in a cellar and treats him as an untouchable. After some time, she throws him out, and he loses his eyesight. He wanders the village begging for food, and one evening he goes to Chandra’s house to beg, bringing the story to its climax.
