An imposter used AI-generated audio to mimic Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s voice and contacted senior U.S. officials and foreign ministers through Signal, according to a State Department cable. At least five people, including three foreign ministers, a U.S. governor, and a member of Congress, received fake voicemails or texts from the impersonator, who also created a fake Signal account using Rubio’s name. The scheme aimed to gain sensitive information or access. The State Department is investigating, stressing it is working to strengthen cybersecurity, the Independent has reported.
