A playthrough of Data East's 1987 pool game for the NES, Side Pocket. In this video, I do a quick run through the trick shot training before jumping into the main Pocket mode at 5:11. Side Pocket was a big hit when it landed in arcades in the summer of 1986, and Data East soon got to work on a home version in order to capitalize on that success. When it hit store shelves in the fall of 1987, the NES game was likewise warmly received and quickly went on to become a bestseller. The NES version retains all of the arcade game's features and mechanics while introducing some significant improvements. The single-player experience is fleshed out with a score-based progression system, four distinct stages ("classes") to be cleared, trick shot bonus rounds, interstage cutscenes, and a proper ending. It also adds multiplayer support, allowing friends to go head-to-head in 9-ball and pocket games. The NES's Side Pocket is just as fast, fun, and challenging as the arcade game, but the new additions and the improved presentation make for a much better game overall. It was no coincidence that Data East chose to use the NES game instead of the arcade original as the base for the 16-bit remakes. To me, Side Pocket is a standout example of the sorts of experiences that made the Nintendo such a beloved machine in the late 80s.
