Speaker 2

All right, Eli, so you just joined Slipknot.

And we figured if you can learn the Slipknot set, you're probably up for the challenge of learning what we're about to give you right now.

Speaker 3

Um... F***!

Speaker 1

F***!

Speaker 3

F***!

I'm sorry.

Can I listen to it again?

Speaker 2

The timer is gonna start right now, so are you ready?

Can I just leave?

All right, Eloy, so recently Mike Portnoy was here and we gave him the impossible task of learning NUMA by tool.

This isn't a song.

This is a mathematic equation.

And we thought we'd continue the pattern of torture.

So here are the ground rules.

We're going to give you the song with the drums in and your job is to learn the original drum part as fast as possible.

And the timer is going to start right now.

So are you ready?

Let's go.

All right, here it is.

Ah, yes.

Speaker 3

Oh my God.

Yeah, I have listened to this song like a couple of times and it's really interesting because he plays like some weird patterns.

Yeah, let me listen again and let's see.

Speaker 2

What are some of the things that you charted out after that first lesson?

Speaker 3

I'm writing, first I wrote like the subdivisions.

Nine, seven, nine, seven, that's the verse.

Then we have the chorus, verse, chorus.

Then I was trying to write the accents after the second chorus.

We have like the I don't remember anymore.

Mostly of his drum fills he's using singles, strokes, so I'm just gonna try to like to, I don't know, to simulate the way he plays, you know, but it's really hard to play the exactly same fills that he's playing.

I'm sorry.

It's not gonna be today.

Speaker 2

Do you want to do another listen-through before you try it out?

Speaker 3

I'm gonna give it a try, yeah, but I'll be just chilling, just trying to follow the song.

Speaker 2

All right, here it is.

Speaker 3

Can I go home, please?

Yeah, I'm gonna do my best, but there's a lot of stuff going on.

It seems like they are not counting the numbers or the tempos.

They're just playing it.

Because all the riffs, they feel very natural.

Let me play one more time.

I'll be just joking.

I won't be serious playing.

Oh my god, that's a lot of notes.

I'm tired already.

I'm sweating.

Definitely a lot going on in that song.

How many hours do I have?

How many days actually?

Oh, my God.

I never tried to play with a Mastodon song.

And Brent, he has such a unique voice, a unique way of playing, so I have really to spend more time on it.

You know, I like to really understand, like, how he plays, all these notes, all these drum fills.

I think I'm gonna try to play one.

Sweet.

Let's do it.

At least so the people, they can understand which song I'm playing.

Oh, he's playing a method of sound.

Okay.

And he's trying to play like Bren.

Oh, yeah.

I'm sorry, Bren.

I wish I could do better for you.

But I'm dying.

You can see it.

That was decent.

That was honest.

Speaker 2

So what do you think Bronn would say about your version of Blood and Thunder?

Speaker 3

Oh, Bronn is such a nice guy.

He's a lovely guy.

We have met a few times in the festivals that we have played together.

I think he will understand what I just did.

I was trying my best to emulate his way of playing.

Speaker 2

Well, maybe we'll have to send it to Bronn and get his reaction at some point.

Oh yeah, sure.

Speaker 1

Hey there, old pal Eloy.

I heard what they did to you.

They made you play Blood and Thunder, and they made you learn it on the spot.

And hey, I'm sorry about it.

Speaker 3

Nailed it.

Speaker 1

Oh, that's cool.

I'm very, very stoked to hear someone with Eloy's caliber of playing do Blood and Thunder.

That's such a cool thing.

Yeah!

Oh my god, amazing.

Eloy, you did an amazing job.

I love you.

You're the best.

That was incredible.

Speaker 3

I have to listen more of your drumming, for sure.

It's very energetic, very demanding.

I'm dying, you can see it.

See you next time.

Thank you guys for watching.

I'm really happy.
