While the 8-Bit version of Sonic 1 was made by Yuzo Koshiro's Ancient, this game, as well as other 8-Bit Sonic platformers going forward, were all developed by Aspect Co. Rather than Koshiro making this game's soundtrack, it was instead mainly composed by Sega's own Naofumi Hayata and Masafumi Ogata, which should sound VERY familiar with anyone that likes Sonic CD, which will be further proven later on through this game. This game also came out BEFORE the more popular Sega Genesis version, which means Tails actually made his debut in THIS game, first! Too bad you don't really get to enjoy him here, though, because... ---------- Tails gets kidnapped! His kidnapper is none other than Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik! Sonic, at this point, only just started to get to know Tails. So now he embarks on a quest to save him from certain doom, and spin through any and all Badniks that get in his way! ---------- This game still mostly plays like 8-Bit Sonic 1, but for some reason, it lost a lot of things that Ancient did with their game. There are no Checkpoints, no shields, and no Bonus Stages. Also, Sonic still can't Spin Dash. The Genesis version of Sonic 2 is the first game to have that move, and that was released a couple of months after this one. ---------- Another unusual thing about this game is it's first Zone. Instead of a grassy field level, you must go through the Under Ground, where you can spin through soft walls, jump over lava, and even ride minecarts! Just like 8-Bit Sonic 1, though, you have to find Chaos Emeralds within the levels, themselves. This time, they will ALWAYS be somewhere in the Act 2 of each Zone. In Under Ground's case, the Blue Emerald is above the goal of its Act 2. First, you have to roll down a hill that will catapult you high towards a minecart, then when that minecart rolls down and off a hill, you have to jump off of it, and then climb some steps. The emerald will await you to the right. Then, just turn around and drop down to reach the goal. ---------- Once again, the Act 3 of every level has no rings, so you pretty much cannot get hit at all in this Act, or you die and will have to start it over. Once again, you have to reach the boss area before you can even fight the boss, and it looks like this was almost not even gonna happen, because Sonic was helplessly falls right into a pit of lava! Or would have, if Eggman didn't save him. I guess he didn't want him to die, he wanted to kill Sonic, himself. So he's gonna try and feed him to his snapping robot: Arijigoku Mecha While AM is snapping at you, Eggman will toss bombs your way. While spin jumping against AM won't kill you, touching those bombs in any way WILL! Try to dodge them so that they hit the robot, instead. But on the Game Gear version, this is much harder, because the screen is smaller and gives you less room to move around with. Also the bombs trajectory is much more random. After Arijigoku Mecha gets bombed enough times, Eggman himself attempts to charge at you, but only destroys his robot, instead. Or he just found the robot useless and decided to dispose of it. Either way, this will be the last time Robotnik appears in this game for a while. He'll mainly leave it to more robots like this one to get rid of Sonic, while he escapes to a distant Zone to keep Tails held hostage. If you want to reach that land, you'll need to get all 6 Chaos Emeralds for this game!
