The man the whole world wanted to capture - Josef Mengele, the angel of death

Josef Mengele (1911-1979) remains a name that inspires horror and hatred. He was sought for 34 years. In 1945, Germany surrendered after Berlin fell to Allied forces, and an impressive list of Nazi dignitaries and other torturers circulated throughout intelligence and police services worldwide. A few years earlier, in April 1941, Mengele, a member of the Waffen-SS, was wounded on the Eastern Front, promoted to the rank of Hauptsturmführer, and received four decorations, including the coveted Iron Cross. He was then assigned as a military doctor at Auschwitz, where during the 21 months he spent there, he earned his reputation and the nickname "the Angel of Death."
