Thousands infected in China as mosquito virus explodes

A mosquito-borne chikungunya virus has rapidly spread across China, infecting about 8,000 people in just four weeks, mainly in Guangdong province and the city of Foshan. The outbreak has prompted a response not seen since Covid, including mass quarantines and the use of mosquito nets in hospital quarantine wards. Hong Kong confirmed its first case on Monday, raising fears of a potential pandemic. Infected residents are isolated for a week unless they test negative beforehand.
