Trump proposes final 60-day Gaza truce — warns Hamas

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday urged Hamas to accept what he described as a “final proposal” for a 60‑day ceasefire with Israel in Gaza, to be delivered by mediators from Qatar and Egypt. In a Truth Social post, Trump said Israel had agreed to the terms of the deal, adding that during the ceasefire period, all parties would work toward ending the war. He warned Hamas that rejecting the plan would make the situation in the Middle East “only get worse.” Speaking earlier to reporters, Trump said he remained hopeful that a ceasefire‑for‑hostages deal could be secured as early as next week. He is expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday to discuss the situation. The Gaza war began when Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, according to Israeli figures. Israel’s retaliatory offensive has since killed more than 56,000 people in Gaza, according to the health ministry there. Hamas says it is open to freeing remaining hostages as part of a deal to end the war, but it has refused to disarm or dismantle, terms Israel insists are required for any permanent ceasefire. Trump’s renewed push comes after the recent ceasefire between Iran and Israel and amid ongoing efforts to leverage regional momentum toward broader de‑escalation.
