The use of the title “Hâdimü’l-Haremeyn” (Servant of Mecca and Madinah) by Ottoman sultans reflects the scale of architectural and infrastructural works dedicated to the city. Below is a list of the main Turkish–Ottoman landmarks in Madinah: 1. Ottoman Influences in Al-Masjid an-Nabawi Although Al-Masjid an-Nabawi was restored several times during the Ottoman period, the most extensive renovation was carried out during the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid (1848–1861). • Columns of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi: Some of the existing columns inside the mosque and the calligraphic inscriptions on them date back to the Ottoman era. • The Green Dome (Kubbe-i Hadra): The dome above the tomb of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ acquired its current form and its famous green color during the reign of Sultan Mahmud II. 2. Hejaz Railway Madinah Station (Amberiye) This is the final station of the Hejaz Railway, built by Sultan Abdülhamid II. • Station Building: Now used as a museum, the building reflects fine stone craftsmanship and the architectural aesthetics of its time. • Amberiye Mosque: Located right next to the station and also built by Abdülhamid II, this mosque stands out for its use of black basalt stone and features elements of classical Ottoman architecture. 3. Ottoman Fortresses and City Walls To ensure the security of Madinah, city walls and fortresses were built at strategic points during the Ottoman period. • Strong Fortresses: Some of these fortresses still stand today or their locations are known; they formed the city’s defensive line. • Guard Buildings: Ottoman-style stone guard posts can be found at strategic passages around Madinah. 4. Water Channels and Infrastructure Works To meet Madinah’s water needs, Ottoman engineers improved the existing water systems. • Restoration of Ayn-ı Zübeyde: From the time of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent onward, the sultans regularly renewed the city’s aqueducts and fountains. • Sebils: In the old residential areas of the city, remnants of sebils and fountains with Ottoman-style marble craftsmanship can still be found. #madinah #saudiarabia #ottoman
