UK to build up to 12 new attack submarines

The UK will build up to 12 new nuclear‑powered attack submarines, as part of a major defence review to be announced by Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday. These submarines will replace the current Astute‑class fleet from the late 2030s. The government also plans to spend £15 billion on modernising the UK’s nuclear warhead programme, ensuring continuous‑at‑sea deterrence. The Strategic Defence Review, led by Lord Robertson, will include 62 recommendations to enhance military readiness, including £1.5 billion for munitions production, 7,000 new long‑range weapons, and a new cyber command, the BBC has reported. The review aims to safeguard the UK and NATO for decades and support 30,000 jobs and thousands of apprenticeships and graduate roles.
