We call these “bipedal exercises” as opposed to the “quadrupedal exercises” (crawls) that we looked at in a recent video. Bipedal exercises are another example of “primal movements” or “movement training” that allow you to develop more mobility and control in your legs in a way that’s gentle and fun. Improving your hip abduction (middle split mobility) can be boring and gruelling, for example. Using gorilla walks makes it much more fun as you travel around a space, opening up your hips in a way that allows for freedom and expression. But it’s not just about mobility! The squatting walk - where you squat between steps - is excellent at triggering hypertrophy (via metabolic stress), explosiveness, strength endurance, joint integrity, and more. The bunny hop can be an even more powerful tool for those that want to run and jump. I’ve used several of these movements to restore my own leg function after years of sitting and typing. While they don’t replace heavy back squats, they can certainly work as a brilliant stand-in for when you don’t have access to a squat rack (or if you just don’t like them). And you should definitely consider using them to supplement your training if you want to unlock more movement in the frontal plane, more mobility, more control, and more endurance. If you currently feel stiff and heavy when you squat, these bipedal exercises might just be the answer!
