The role of Diva Plavalaguna was played by the French actress Maiwenn, who at the time of the film’s production was in a civil marriage with Luc Besson. The aria "Il dolce suono" from the opera "Lucia di Lammermoor" by composer Gaetano Donizetti in Italian was performed behind the scenes by opera singer Inva Mula. Part of the aria performed by Plavalaguna is rendered with synthetic vocals—created on a computer rather than sung by a human voice—because the human voice cannot master the extreme range required for the character’s legendary vocal performance. At the time of filming no person was found capable of this, a claim later refuted when the part was performed by Kazakh singer Dimash Kudaibergen. Luc Besson wanted to shoot the stage on which Diva performed the aria in France, but could not find a suitable scene, so filming was moved to London’s Royal Covent Garden and the 007 Stage studio. For some time, various publications believed that the voice of the opera diva was that of the Inca-origin singer Ima Sumak.
