Shortly before the end of the First Gulf War, retreating Iraqi troops set fire to over 700 oil wells in Kuwait. Werner Herzog and cinematographer Paul Berriff captured the resulting environmental catastrophe, creating a visual requiem for a planet on fire. Unlike standard war documentaries, "Lessons of Darkness" avoids political commentary, instead presenting the devastation through a cosmic, operatic lens accompanied by the music of Wagner, Mahler, and Schubert. Viewing the firefighters as alien creatures and the blazing landscape as a dying world, Herzog challenges the viewer to look directly into the heart of destruction.
