On 5 November 1985, BBC1 broadcast its final evening of programming before shutting down the transmitter. At 11:59pm the BBC1 clock signaled the closing announcement, and the national anthem was played over the COW globe. The screen then faded to black, with brief periods of silence and tone, and a pulse and bar sequence. At 14:01 the studio lost signal to the transmitter, and by 20:47 the transmitter was shut down.
