In the coming months and years, research in the humanities will enter a new world. With the ability to design and simulate human groups and societies, social research will undergo fundamental changes. Traditional methods are no longer justified. We examine two AI agent projects at Stanford that simulate human behaviors and interactions at group, organizational, and societal levels with high precision, providing powerful tools for applied research. These agents enable social scientists to evaluate theories, policymakers to predict collective behavior, and to make better decisions. Traditional agents were rule‑based and could not model complex human behavior, whereas AI agents use large language models to gather environmental data, think, reason, plan, and improve decisions, enabling simulation of complex interactions.
