On the night of November 9, 1989, Oberstleutnant Harald Schäfer watches in a TV studio the live press conference with Günter Schabowski. Schabowski announces that private travel to the West is now permitted. East Berliners soon line up at the border, hoping to cross into West Berlin. While Schäfer waits for orders that never arrive, he faces escalating pressure from the growing crowds and from Western journalists who film every moment. Unable to wait any longer, he decides to open the gate and suspend all controls, turning a tense stand‑off into a historic moment that makes him a hero of history.
