The BM‑13 Katyusha rocket launcher, introduced by the Soviet Union during World II, was a mobile multiple‑rocket system that could deliver a massive bombardment in a short burst. Mounted on trucks, it fired 122‑mm rockets in salvos of up to 40, covering a 400,000‑square‑metre area in 7–10 seconds and delivering the equivalent firepower of 72 conventional artillery pieces. Although less accurate than traditional guns, its rapid, saturated fire and ability to relocate immediately after firing made it a formidable psychological and tactical weapon. The launcher earned the nickname “Stalin’s organ” from German troops, who were struck by its pipe‑organ‑like array and the howling sound of its rockets.
